New Caledonia is a fairly wealthy place because they have many copper mines. Noumea is the capital, and it's a leafy beautiful city with a high standard of living. The Australians based troops there, and as a thank you left 2 large coastal defense guns. There is a modern French military base 50 yards form them, and they make absolutely no effort to maintain them, or keep them from being defaced by graffiti. Australia defended one of their colonies, and the French point the Aussies i the eye with a sharp stick. Ah, the French..... lovely people.
